Anne of Green Gables ist ein 1908 erschienener Roman der kanadischen Autorin Lucy Maud Montgomery - L. M. Montgomery. Er wurde für alle Altersgruppen geschrieben und gilt seit Mitte des 20. Der Roman erzählt, wie Anne ihren Weg durch das Leben bei den Cuthberts, in der Schule und in der Stadt macht. Seit seiner Veröffentlichung wurde Anne of Green Gables in mindestens 36 Sprachen übersetzt und mehr als 50 Millionen Mal verkauft, was es zu einem der meistverkauften Bücher weltweit macht. Das Buch wurde als Film, Fernsehfilm, Zeichentrick- und Live-Action-Fernsehserie adaptiert. Auch Musicals und Theaterstücke sind entstanden, die jährlich in Europa und Japan aufgeführt werden. Anne Shirley, ein junges Waisenkind aus der fiktiven Gemeinde Bolingbroke, Nova Scotia (basierend auf der realen Gemeinde New London, Prince Edward Island), wird zu Marilla und Matthew Cuthbert, unverheirateten Geschwistern in den Fünfzigern und Sechzigern, geschickt, nachdem sie ihre Kindheit in fremden Heimen und Waisenhäusern verbracht hat. Marilla und Matthew hatten ursprünglich beschlossen, einen Jungen aus dem Waisenhaus zu adoptieren, um Matthew bei der Bewirtschaftung ihrer Farm in Green Gables zu helfen, die in der fiktiven Stadt Avonlea - die auf Cavendish, Prince Edward Island, basiert - liegt. Aufgrund eines Missverständnisses schickt das Waisenhaus stattdessen Anne. Anne ist phantasievoll, phantasievoll, wissbegierig und dramatisch. Doch es gibt auch das: Annes Kämpfe und Freuden bei der Eingewöhnung in Green Gables, dem ersten richtigen Zuhause, das sie je kennengelernt hat; die Landschule, in der sie schnell hervorragende Leistungen erbringt; ihre Freundschaft mit Diana Barry, dem Mädchen, das nebenan wohnt; ihre beste oder "Busenfreundin", wie Anne sie liebevoll nennt; ihre aufkeimenden literarischen Ambitionen; und ihre Rivalität mit ihrem Klassenkameraden Gilbert Blythe, der sie wegen ihrer roten Haare neckt. Dafür erntet er sofort ihren Hass, obwohl er sich mehrmals entschuldigt. Mit der Zeit merkt Anne jedoch, dass sie Gilbert nicht mehr hasst, aber ihr Stolz und ihre Sturheit halten sie davon ab, mit ihm zu sprechen. Sie hat Auseinandersetzungen mit den unangenehmen Pye-Schwestern Gertie und Josie und häufige häusliche "Kratzer", wie zum Beispiel, dass sie sich die Haare grün färbt, obwohl sie sie eigentlich schwarz färben wollte, und dass sie Diana versehentlich betrunken macht, indem sie ihr etwas gibt, das sie für Himbeersirup hält, das sich aber als Johannisbeerwein herausstellt ...
