While it is possible to achieve many of these reductions through appropriate climate-responsive design, many architects are not trained to do this. Filling an urgent need for a design reference in this emerging field, Carbon-Neutral Architectural Design describes how to reduce building-related greenhouse gas emissions through appropriate design techniques. This full-color book presents strategies and methods to achieve CO2 reductions, with an emphasis on control of energy flows through the building envelope and passive heating and cooling strategies. In the 21st century, architects and engineers are being challenged to produce work that is concurrently sustainable and resilient. Buildings need to mitigate their impact on climate change by minimising their carbon footprint, while also countering the challenging new weather conditions. Today the phrase "global warming" is everywhere and as architects our response is to make sustainable buildings. The idea of designing a carbon neutral building started with a different proposal: build a house without mechanical systems in North Carolina. After some research the phrase "carbon neutral" appeared describing a development called BedZed in Sutton, London. Carbon neutral means that the building would not release any CO[superscript]2 or any other greenhouse gas that depletes the ozone layer and contributes to global warming. As a result the research took a different prospective and the design changed from a single family house to student housing. The design of a Carbon neutral student housing was developed in 4 tasks beginning with the development of a rating system based on the carbon neutral concept. This rating system would address the design process, setting the guidelines, strategies and parameters for the residential housing through is final evaluation. Taking BedZed as well as other buildings, the common characteristics that they share is that all of them have based their design on passive solar strategies. Following the criteria for passive solar design with the aim to fill the categories of the rating system the design of the student housing began with the master plan, then floor plans, elevations, sections and details. Another goal of the design was to use each piece of the building as a tool to reach carbon neutrality, that is why the implementation of PV panels at the early stage of the design was essential as well as certain changes in architectural elements like the hallway bridge. At the end the building will be evaluated applying the rating system, closing the loop of this process that started with this document.
